Old North Church (Christ Church in the City of Boston) records, 1569-1997

Records of the Old North Church (Christ Church in the City of Boston) consist largely of administrative and financial records, as well as baptism, marriage and burial records; pew records; tomb records; and records relating to the construction and renovation of the church. Also included are the administrative records and attendance rolls from Salem Street Academy and Christ Church Sunday School, and records of church-related organizations such as the Christ Church Defensive Association, Christ Church Missionary Society, Women's Guild of Christ Church, and the Lantern League of Christ Church. Clergy records include the papers of the church's first minister, Timothy Cutler, and other early ministers, although the bulk of this series consists of the correspondence, papers, and sermons of Charles R. Peck (vicar from 1946-1956), Howard P. Kellett (vicar from 1956-1971), and Robert W. Golledge (vicar from 1971-1996). Ecclesiastical volumes include the "Vinegar Bible" and three of the prayer books presented to Christ Church by King George II in 1733. Also included is a collection of 167 church library volumes (stored offsite) dating from 1569-1995. The collection also contains research notes, scrapbooks, and published articles of numerous church historians, most notably Thomas Hall, Charles K. Bolton, and Mary K. D. Babcock. This collection also contains a ca. 1750 bell-ringing contract signed by Paul Revere. In addition to the administration and daily activities of the church, other topics covered within this collection include church political controversies of 1854 and 1893, the changing community of Boston's North End, ongoing efforts to historically preserve the church building, and the church's participation in the celebrations of the U. S. Bicentennial in 1975-1976.

52 document boxes, 75 volumes (including 42 extra tall and 8 oversize), and 6 oversize boxes.
